How to use a dildo
Dildos are an incredibly popular sex toy for those who enjoy internal stimulation. However, using a dildo for the first time may be an intimidating experience for some. In this comprehensive how-to guide, the LOVE Team will explain how to get the most out of your new favourite toy.
1. Relax!
2. Get your body ready
Make sure that your body is ready for your first session. Playing with your dildo will be more pleasurable and comfortable.
If you’re using your dildo for vaginal penetration, stimulate your clitoris to increase arousal and natural lubrication. Using a clit stimulator or just your fingers will help you relax.
If you’re using your dildo for anal penetration, start by inserting a few fingers into your anus to get used to the sensations of penetration, or use a small anal plug.
3. Use the right lube
It is essential that you use the right type of personal lubricant with your dildo. Not all lubricants are the same: some lubes may damage the material of your sex toy.
For silicone or TPE/TPR dildos, use a water-based lubricant: silicone or oil-based lubricants are not suitable for silicone toys. Glass or metal dildos, on the other hand, are compatible with any lube that you’d like (water-based, silicone-based or even oil-based).
4. Insert your dildo!
Start by inserting the thinnest part of the dildo, while breathing deeply: the more relaxed you are, the easier this step will be.
If you’re body isn’t totally ready, inserting a dildo can be painful or uncomfortable. Don’t force yourself and take as many breaks as necessary. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, enjoy your dildo at your own pace, and trust your instincts!
5. Find the perfect kind of penetration for you
Shallow penetration for beginners
Deep penetration for the more experienced
Penetration to stimulate the G-spot or P-spot
Stimulating a woman’s G-spot (about an inch from the entrance of the vagina) or a man’s P-spot (prostate, in front of the rectum and under the bladder) with a dildo can result in an explosive orgasm. Choose a firmer dildo with a curved shaft to perfectly target the zone. Remember that the shape and size of these two points can vary from person to person: take all the time you need to explore your body and be gentle with yourself.
Double penetration
Double penetration is the simultaneous penetration of a woman’s vagina and anus. You can perform double penetration during solo play or while having fun with your partner. Double penetration delivers incredibly intense orgasms. Here are some tips for getting started with double penetration:
- Use a double-ended dildo: Bend your double dong into a U-shape to stimulate both of your orifices at the same time.
- Use two different dildos: Use two dildos of different sizes and designs for more fun.
- Use a dildo in your vagina and an anal plug in your anus: This is a great alternative to using two dildos for DP beginners.
- Use a dildo during sex with your partner: While your partner is penetrating one of your orifices, use your dildo in your other orifice.
6. Experiment with temperature play
Using a glass dildo will allow you to experiment with temperature play. Simply dip your glass dildo into hot or cold water. This will warm the dildo up or cool it down. A warmer dildo is wonderfully relaxing, while a cooler dildo will invigorate you.
When using hot water, remember to check the temperature of the water and that of the dildo to avoid burning yourself.
7. Enjoy hands-free penetration
If your dildo has a suction cup, you can stick it onto any smooth, flat surface (floor, mirror, table, etc.) and experiment with hands-free penetration. This will allow you to easily change the position and angle of penetration. Use your hands to stimulate other erogenous zones (e.g. clitoris or penis) or other sex toys while riding your dildo. Don't forget to check that your dildo is firmly stuck onto the surface before using it to prevent any accidents.
8. Use your dildo with your partner
Using a dildo will allow you to share new experiences with your partner: why not try role-playing and experimenting with a bit of Dom/sub play?
Discuss your partner's limits and desires before trying anything new. Respect each other's boundaries and agree what kind of scenarios you’d like to try out.
9. Clean your dildo after every session
- Clean your dildo immediately after every use with warm water and mild soap, or a special sex toy cleaner.
- You can also use boiling water to sterilise silicone, glass or metal dildos. Just boil the dildo in water for about three minutes and you’ll be all set. If you have used your dildo for anal penetration or if you are going to share your dildo, you should definitely sterilise your dildo. Let it dry completely before storing it.
- Choose a clean, dry place to store your dildo, away from prying eyes. You can even purchase a storage case with padlock specially designed for sex toys.
